How to Lube and Film Mechanical Keyboard Switches

Lubricate and film mechanical keyboard switches, from separating the parts to reassembling the switches.

Step-by-Step

  1. Pull a keycap off the keyboard using a wire keycap puller, exposing the switch. Evidence: observed [00:00].
  2. Extract the switch from the PCB using a metal switch puller. Evidence: observed [00:02].
  3. Seat the switch on a metal switch opener and press down to release the top housing clips. Evidence: observed [00:08–00:10].
  4. Separate the switch into top housing, stem, spring and bottom housing. Evidence: observed [00:13].

  5. Place the stems into one set of slots and the bottom housings into the other on the lubing station. Evidence: observed [00:25].
  6. Collect the springs into a plastic bag, add a few drops of GPL 105 oil with a glass dropper, and shake to coat the springs. Evidence: observed [00:35].
  7. Apply a small bead of LumeKeebs grease to the three inside rails of the bottom housing with a fine-tipped brush, leaving the metal leaf and the inside centre hole dry. Evidence: observed [00:39–00:44], with on-screen caution to avoid the metal part and the inside hole.

  8. Apply grease to the rails of the stem with the same brush. Evidence: observed [00:49].
  9. Peel a switch film from its backing with tweezers and place it over the bottom housing. Evidence: observed [00:54–00:58].

  10. Reassemble by stacking the spring, stem and top housing onto the bottom housing. Evidence: observed [01:00].

Preflight check before step 1: confirm the switch model, the LumeKeebs grease grade, and the film material and thickness are compatible with the switches being modified. None of these specifications is shown in the demonstration, so verify against the manufacturer or vendor before starting.

Common Pitfalls

Cautions actually shown in the demonstration: - Do not lubricate the metal leaf inside the bottom housing.
